Friends, Feilans, roleplayers. Whilst no doubt some, if not most of you are aware, the upcoming Space Age of Feila has been destroyed in its original text. You might think we would give up or postpone the Age's development, in light of the loss of so much data, it could not fit into a single post, as previous Ages had done. It was a work of at least half the year. However, my resolve to provide you with a fun, realistic and playable Age of Space to complement the already diverse settings we offer for RP, is not deterred in the slightest. I believe the second writing of it shall pass much quicker, as now we know what concepts to use, and which to discard. The Space Age is not destroyed, for you cannot destroy my ideas, and you cannot destroy my memories via the internet. It simply needs to be re-communicated in text, which shall be backed up more securely.

This is where you come in. Throughout the Age's construction, we discussed back and forth amongst ourselves and with a few knowledgeable users on one issue, that shall now be decided by you all. There is no point writing this Age, if you cannot have fun within it, and some users, including myself, consider this issue to be of vital importance to the success of the Age.

The issue is this: Should the Space Age be centred around ONE star system, that is, the system the World of Feila resides in, or should it be centred around MANY star systems, each with their own unique planets and phenomena.

Advantages for ONE star system:

- All RPs are still concentrated around Feila and its system.
- More realistic in terms of technology.
- Fits what has already been written, so will take less time to write.
- Prevents loopholes in god-moding (eg: 'Secret' star systems, 'Instant Reinforcements' or 'Instant Getaways'.)
- Travel is more realistic.
- More detail for one system, as opposed to reams of data on many unique systems.

Advantages for MANY star systems:

- More System diversities.
- Fits into Science Fiction 'canon'.
- Faster that Light travel.
- More celestial phenomena.
- Has options for large 'Intersolar Empires'.
- Larger areas for users to establish non-canon locations.

This is one of those "if only I had saved (blank)" moments. I clearly remember when I had been looking at it and thinking "I won't have drawing board access for long. Maybe I should save it to look it over later.... nah, it'll always be here anyway."

I think the age should start around one star system with the opportunity for later additions if warranted.

I'd actually prefer a mix for this although my vote went to one.

I prefer one for the ability of setting out things very definitly and having proper time but many's advantages are too temtpign to completely ignore for instance you could have a mix. So most exist in Felia's system but it is possible to do light speed travel for those wishing to expand further though the tech isn't to the point that it's common place as a form of travel.

Personally, I'm leaning towards multiple star systems, though probably mostly unsettled. No grand interstellar empire, just colonies far beyond nowhere.
In a lot of sci-fi I've read, faster-than-light travel is usually assisted by gravity wells, that is, points in the universe that are nearly bent into a tube, which accomades FTL travel from one point to another. Having these as exclusive points for FTL would resolve a lot of god-moding issues, and also give some tactical sense to any battles in space (blockade/control jump points) as well as serve as a main focus of interstellar politics, much like the trade and colonization routes of the Age of Exploration.

That is why I think we should start with one and see what happens. This way James can focus his creative energies on a really detailed star system, and then maybe a wormhole can be discovered, or a space lane, or something similarly limited. I'd love to actually play the first interstellar voyages, not just read about them.

EDIT: I think limitations are important. If we go FTL in any way, travelling to the nearest star should be like the first ocean-going trips to the new world; weeks or months long, and rather risky.

That is a tough one there. I think I gotta agree with everyone else here, starting with one system and then maybe expanding later on.

If we go for just one, that's only going to be a slight bit more advanced than the Age of Cyborgs, right? I'm sure they've at least got some space travel already occuring, but the idea of a rogue band from Rike Arktik delving into deep-space by hijacking one of the spaceships and never returning... *Writer juices are pumping* Well, either way will be a great way to explore how Toyomi managed to have a descendent on another planet. :3

It will be a lot more advanced than Cyborgs regardless of whether there's one system or not. It takes a lot of technological progress just to be able to quickly and efficiently explore one system. It's when you get to multiple systems, that science starts to stretch to unrealistic boundaries that can only exist in fantasy. At least, with what we could create within a short timeframe of life.

I was actually thinking along the same lines as Sade.

Start with one system, and then maybe expand.
The first trip outside the system would be an awesome RP.
