I’m new to Role-Playing, what do the abbreviations RP, IC, OOC, PC, NPC, and SPaG mean?

RP - Role-Play

There are plenty of definitions you can find if you Google Role-Play, but for the purposes of Feila, the most relevant would be: A story involving two or more authors where they each have one or more characters that meet and interact.

IC - In Character

In terms of a Role-Play, In Character is when you are writing the actual content of the story including setting, character interactions, dialogue, etc.

OOC - Out Of Character

In terms of a Role-Play, Out of Character is anytime an author is writing something outside the content of the story. An example of this might be one author telling another that he will be leaving soon and will have to continue the Role-Play at a later time.

e.g. ((I’m heading to class. I’ll post when I get back.))

Please Note: When writing Out of Character comments, it is typical to use either the “OOC:” tag or simply double brackets as in the above example.

PC - Playable Character

Playable Characters are basically your main characters in a Role-Play. They are the characters that have been specifically thought of and fleshed out by an author and inserted into a Role-Play. If you have ever played an RPG video game, think of Playable Characters as the character you are playing and any others that join your party and you are able to directly control.

NPC - Non-Playable Character

Non-Playable Characters are your supporting characters in a Role-Play. They are usually not as fleshed out as Playable Characters and are used to accentuate the development of and interactions between Playable Characters. To use the RPG video game example, these would be any of the multitudes of characters that you are not able to directly control.

SPaG - Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar

SPaG is a short hand for the technical conventions of the English language. Use good SPaG, it reflects better on you as a writer.

Everything you ever wanted to know about gold!

Let me start off by saying that gold, the casino, the lottery, the graphical stat-based battle system... none of these things are necessary. In other words, they have nothing at all what-so-ever to do with play-by-post role-playing. You only need gold if you want to fight using the stat-based battle system or if you're wanting to purchase a service available in the Marketplace. This thread will explain anything and everything that you could possibly want to know about gold: What it is, how to get it, how to use it, and where to use it.

What is Gold?

Gold is the play currency of this forum. It has nothing to do with our play-by-post role-playing. You do not need it to role-play, and you do not need to mention it while role-playing. Gold is used solely to buy items for the graphical stat-based battle system and services from the Marketplace. Gold is a completely additional fun thing.

How do I get Gold?

A list of some different methods is: Posting topics and replies, opening an account at the vault, buying stocks at the stock market, purchasing tickets for the lottery, playing at the casino, winning battles using our graphical stat-based battle system, and participating in contests.

How do I use Gold?

Some areas that accept gold work sort of like a video game, while others require that you "donate" gold to a certain person in order to receive their service. The former method is pretty much self-explanatory, or, in other words, you'll know what to do when you encounter it. The second method is done by bringing up the other person's profile -- The vendor as you might call them -- and selecting the "Donate" option, then entering how much gold that you want to give them, maybe type in a message such as "This is for XXX service", and finally clicking the "Donate" button.

What is the Graphical Stat-based Battle System?

The graphical stat-based battle system is exclusively for role-playing stat-based battles, and pits players against monsters and other players in a special arena. Commands are entered simply by selecting a weapon, magical attack, or item from a drop down list then pressing a button, and all of the mathematical equations are done automatically by the battle system. For more information on the stat-based battle system, you can read a FAQ here. If you have questions that are not in the FAQ or require clarification, feel free to send a PM to RabidFox or JamesG.

What is the Marketplace?

The Marketplace is where you can purchase services from other members, such as custom sprites, artwork, or avatars. You can also purchase custom ranks or a custom username color. Additionally, this is where you would set up your own shop and sell your services for gold. If you're not interested in obtaining gold, you can simply give away your services for no cost.

What about Contests?

These can give away all kinds of different prizes, and not just gold. You should read individual contest threads for more information.
